Love this week work-out. I dd all of them. On stroke day 7/13- I did fly on the 4×50 set @ 1:30 (25 meter pool), and on the 6 & 8 50s @1:30 I swam backstroke. On the 6s 8s sets, my backstroke started to look ugly after swimming the first 25 as I got tired. So I put on some fins to maintain my stroke and kept my interval time. These set became more of make the interval instead of descending. Question is would it have been better instead of puting on fins. Should I have done the 50s as 25 back/25 free set? I can hold a nice 25 back swim, but I make the turn and come out of the water and am dead in water to finish that 50. Would that increase my endurance on my stroke swim days?
Great question! I think you have a few options: First, there is nothing wrong with using fins (although they can be addictive). Use fins sometimes, especially if it allows you to keep your stroke together. It’s also perfectly fine to swim 25 stroke/25 free instead of 50 stroke, especially if you are having trouble keeping your stroke together and making the interval. The third option is to loosen up the interval, give yourself more time between repeats. Definitely modify the sets as needed, that’s perfectly okay! Some days you may be up for the whole thing, some days you may need to sub in more freestyle. Listen to your body. The main thing is you are in the water and hopefully enjoying it!
